3DBigDataSpace at CIPA Seoul 2025: Advancing XR for Cultural Heritage
Published on 12 Sep 2025
At the CIPA 2025 International Symposium in Seoul, researchers, professionals, and innovators came together to discuss the latest breakthroughs in heritage documentation and digital interpretation. Among the diverse sessions, 3DBigDataSpace proudly contributed to the conversation on how VR, AR, and XR technologies can transform cultural heritage experiences.
Showcasing Multi-User 4D World Viewers
On Wednesday, 27 August 2025, during the technical session “VR/AR and XR for Heritage Interpretation and Presentation (2)”, project partners Sander Münster, Jonas Bruschke, Vaibhav Rajan, Dávid Komorowicz, Rebecca Preßler, and Dominik Ukolov presented:
“4D World Viewers as Multi-User Content Management Systems.”
This talk explored how multi-user 4D viewers can function as powerful content management environments, enabling heritage professionals and researchers to not only visualize but also organize, annotate, and collaboratively manage 3D and 4D cultural data.
Why This Matters for 3DBigDataSpace
The 3DBigDataSpace project is working toward a European Data Space for cultural heritage, where institutions across Europe can share, enrich, and reuse datasets. The research presented in Seoul directly supports this mission by:
- Demonstrating new approaches to collaborative interaction with 3D/4D data.
- Bridging research and practice by developing tools that integrate visualization and content management.
- Highlighting scalability, showing how these systems can work across disciplines and institutions in Europe and beyond.
A Recognition of Excellence
We are also proud to share that a paper led by a colleague from SFU Jena Vaibhav Rajan received a Best Paper Award at the CIPA conference:
V. Rajan, F. Maiwald, and S. Münster: Towards LOD-2 Building Reconstruction: Leveraging Building Footprints and Roof Shape Extraction Methods from VHR Imagery.
This recognition highlights the outstanding research contributions towards advancing 3D heritage data management and reuse.
Connecting Global and European Efforts
CIPA Seoul provided a unique platform to connect with international experts in heritage documentation and digital interpretation. For 3DBigDataSpace, the symposium underlined the importance of global collaboration in shaping future-ready infrastructures for 3D cultural heritage.
From multi-user XR environments to standards for interoperability, the insights shared in Seoul strengthen our ongoing work in building a sustainable, open, and collaborative framework for 3D cultural heritage data.
Looking Ahead
As we continue to develop the 3DBigDataSpace pipeline and tools, the dialogue at CIPA Seoul is a reminder of the shared global challenge: making 3D cultural heritage data accessible, reusable, and impactful. By bringing together international research and European initiatives, we are one step closer to a truly interconnected digital heritage ecosystem.
