Exploring the Future of 3D Digital Heritage: 3DBigDataSpace Workshop in Siena
Published on 29 Aug 2025
Across Europe, museums, universities, and cultural organizations are turning to 3D digitization, virtual reality, and shared data platforms to preserve and share our heritage. The European co-funded 3DBigDataSpace project is at the forefront of this movement, co-creating a European Data Space for 3D cultural heritage: a framework that allows high-quality 3D data to be shared, analyzed, and reused across institutions.
On 8 September 2025, 3DBigDataSpace will co-host together with the XRculture, Eureka3D-XR and 3D-4CH projects a workshop as part of the Digital Heritage Conference, focusing on 3D data in the Data Space for Cultural Heritage. It’s not just about learning the technology, it’s about exploring how collaborative, cross-border projects are shaping the future of digital heritage in Europe.
The workshop starts at 3.30 pm CET in Room 4 - 262 and will last until 6.30 pm with a break in between.

Why a Shared 3D Data Space Matters
Imagine a world where every museum, archaeological project, and university could share 3D scans of cultural artifacts in a compatible, reusable, and accessible format. Right now, different standards, formats, and software make collaboration difficult. The 3DBigDataSpace project is tackling these challenges head-on by creating a common framework that ensures interoperability, high-quality data, and the possibility for innovative reuse.
Creating a shared 3D Data Space isn’t just about technology—it’s about impact:
- Protecting endangered heritage: Digitizing sites and objects vulnerable to decay or conflict.
- Making culture accessible: Students, researchers, and the public can explore 3D models online.
- Sparking creativity: Designers, architects, and storytellers can repurpose 3D heritage for new experiences.
- Informing research and policy: Accurate digital models aid conservation, planning, and decision-making.
