Workshop on Advanced 3D Digitisation Techniques
Published on 26 Feb 2026
On 12 February, a dynamic hands-on workshop organised within the 3DBigDataSpace initiative brought together cultural heritage and technology professionals to explore advanced approaches to 3D digitisation. The session formed part of the project’s broader mission to build capacity across Europe for creating, managing, and sharing high-quality 3D data, supporting institutions in contributing to emerging digital infrastructures for cultural heritage.
Advancing Spatial Data Capture
The workshop was designed and delivered by experts from the Poznań Supercomputing and Networking Center (PCSS), combining expertise from the New Media Department and the Digital Libraries and Knowledge Platforms Department. Participants were introduced to advanced spatial data acquisition techniques, including structured light scanning and laser scanning, and learned how these approaches can be applied in real cultural heritage scenarios from documenting artifacts to supporting conservation and research.

Learning by Doing
A central highlight was the practical session, where participants digitised selected objects themselves. This hands-on approach allowed attendees to better understand the full workflow, from capture to processing, and to build confidence in applying these methods within their own institutions.

Expertise Behind the Workshop
The training was prepared and led by a dedicated team including Aleksandra Nowak, Paweł Marciniak, and Błażej Betański from the Digital Libraries and Knowledge Platforms Department, alongside Maciej Głowiak, Michał Lorek, and Jacek Walczak from the New Media Department.
As organisor of the event Paweł Marciniak noted:
“Workshops like this are essential for bridging the gap between advanced digitisation technologies and their practical application in cultural heritage institutions. By sharing knowledge and hands-on experience, we support professionals in building sustainable digital workflows.”

Collaboration for Digital Heritage
Beyond technical training, the workshop fostered dialogue and exchange among participants, highlighting tools and approaches that support the preservation and accessibility of digital cultural heritage. The objects digitised during the session will soon be available through dedicated software developed within the project, further extending the workshop’s impact.

Looking Ahead
By continuing to organise hands-on trainings and fostering collaboration across institutions, 3DBigDataSpace strengthens the European ecosystem for digital cultural heritage. Workshops like this not only build technical skills but also contribute to a shared vision of making 3D heritage data more accessible, reusable, and impactful for research, education, and public engagement.
